About this Role

Mechanic at Southern Electric Corporation shall possess the ability to operate/drive any truck, including tractor trailers in order to support all assigned work activity. Employee must have three (3) years’ experience and possess a valid commercial driver’s license. 

What You'll Do

  • Analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds and maintains motor vehicles and construction equipment, such as pickup trucks and heavier trucks ranging from ½ ton to 10 ton GVWR, company automobiles, cranes, power shovels, digger derricks, aerial lift equipment, motor graders, trench-digging machines, conveyors, bulldozers, pumps, compressors, portable generators, portable power supplies, hydraulic press heads and motors and pneumatic tools.
  • Operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects.
  • Dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoist and hand tools. 
  • Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using test equipment and gauges.
  • Tests overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
  • May weld or have welded broken parts and structural members.
  • May fabricate or have fabricated, parts or devices used in the construction and/or maintenance of power and telecommunication systems.
  • May direct workers engaged in cleaning parts and assist with assembly and disassembly of equipment.
  • May repair, adjust and maintain specialized machinery, such as conductor pullers, tensioners, spacer buggies, drilling and cutting equipment.
  • Plans work procedure, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
  • Raises equipment using hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to underside of equipment.
  • Remove as needed, engine, transmission, or differential, using wrenches and hoist.
  • Disassembles unit and inspects parts for wear, using test equipment, calipers, and thickness gauges.
  • May repair, replace parts or send equipment off to have parts, such as pistons, rods, gears, valves and bearing replaced.
  • Overhauls or replaces carburetors, fuel injection systems, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps.
  • May rebuild or send off to be rebuilt crankshafts and cylinder blocks, valve heads, etc.
  • Rewires ignition system, lights, and instrument panel.
  • Relines and adjusts brakes, aligns front end, repairs, or replaces shock absorbers and solders leak in radiator.
  • Mend damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welded broken parts.
  • Replaces and adjusts headlights, and installs and repairs accessories, such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Identify safety equipment on a specific piece of equipment.
  • Read and use the operations manual of a specific piece of equipment.
  • Perform general cleanup of equipment.
  • Identify components and controls of machine.
  • Able to perform daily walk arounds, routine and periodic checks, inspections, and the maintenance of equipment. 
  • Learn and interpret proper hand signals.
  • Perform basic operation of equipment.
  • Assist with the adjustment of brakes and clutches.
  • Assist with the service and maintenance schedule of the equipment.
  • Read and use all capacity charts for the equipment.
  • Perform the setup of the equipment, connect, and disconnect trailers.
  • Capable of loading and unloading equipment and materials.
  • Capable of securing loads on trailers.
  • Adheres to all Company and Safety Policies while conducting Company business.
  • Shall attend training classes as prescribed by the Training Department.
  • Capable of operating most construction equipment, booms, etc. if needed.
  • May also perform other duties as needed.
  • Trustworthy and safety minded and must be conversant with all safety procedures/requirements applicable to the equipment.
  • Have the ability to spot or recognize potential danger areas and take evasive actions on his/her own initiative.

What You'll Bring

  • May be required to relocate as work requirements demand.
  • Is required to hold a valid commercial driver’s license.
  • Is required to maintain a current Medical Certification Card.
  • May be required to obtain light crane certification for boom trucks etc.
  • May work in storm restoration operations to rebuild and/or repair damaged power systems.
  • May attend training classes or seminars to gather knowledge of new processes, safety regulations and/or refresher training.
  • All individuals in this personnel classification must meet requirements of OSHA standard 29 CFT 1910 for the specific operated equipment.

                  Physical Qualifications 

  • Lifting and handling materials up to 60 pounds unassisted.
  • Walking and working across uneven terrain.
  • Exposure to hot and cold weather conditions
  • Climbing on and off large trucks and equipment.
