About this Role

Job Summary 

The Equipment Operator is responsible for safely operating light to heavy construction equipment used in site work, pipeline, and excavation projects. Duties include operating machinery to move earth, materials, or equipment; assisting in jobsite preparation; performing equipment inspections; and supporting field crews as directed. Operators are classified into Levels I, II, and III based on demonstrated skill level, experience, and ability to work independently. This position is primarily outdoors and requires the ability to work safely in all weather conditions and environments 

Key Responsibilities 

Equipment Operator I – Entry Level 

  • Operate light or moderate equipment such as skid steers, mini-excavators, backhoes, and front-end loaders under supervision. 
  • Assist with trenching, grading, and basic excavation tasks. 
  • Conduct daily equipment inspections; lubricate and fuel as directed. 
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area. 
  • Follow all company and site-specific safety policies and procedures. 
  • Wear and maintain required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, high-visibility vest, and steel-toed boots) at all times. 
  • Report any hazards, malfunctions, or unsafe conditions immediately. 
  • Travel to remote project sites as needed. 

Equipment Operator II – Intermediate Level 

  • Operate a wider range of light and heavy equipment, including dozers, graders, and mid-size excavators. 
  • Assist with site preparation and layout for pipeline, demolition, or excavation projects. 
  • Perform trenching, grading, and backfilling operations safely and efficiently. 
  • Conduct pre-shift equipment inspections, lubrication, and refueling. 
  • Perform basic mechanical maintenance and troubleshooting. 
  • Mentor less experienced operators and laborers when assigned. 
  • Consistently adhere to safety and operational standards; maintain full PPE compliance.

  • For Levels II–IV: Ability to read and interpret construction plans and perform minor layout tasks. 
  • For Levels III–IV: Leadership, mentoring, and field coordination abilities. 

Qualifications 

  • Operator I – Entry Level with some previous construction experience 
  • Operator II - Minimum 2,000 hours of operating experience

Education & Certifications 

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred for Levels I and II, Vocational training preferred for Level III 
  • Certifications: OSHA 10, CDL preferred for Level III 
  • Working Conditions 

    • Primarily outdoor field environment on active construction sites. 
    • Exposure to dirt, noise, vibration, weather, and heavy equipment operation hazards. 
    • May require travel to remote sites and overtime including weekends or evenings. 
    • PPE (hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, high-visibility vest, and steel-toed boots) must be worn at all times; additional PPE may be required depending on jobsite or task. 

    Physical Requirements: 

    • Prolonged periods operating equipment and sitting for extended durations. 
    • Must be able to lift up to 80 pounds and push/pull up to 50 pounds. 
    • Ability to operate in all weather conditions and varied terrains. 
    • Manual dexterity and coordination to handle controls and tools. 
    • Physical strength, balance, and stamina to safely complete assigned work.
