About this Role

An Estimator I at Irby Construction Company is an entry-level position responsible for assisting in the preparation of cost estimates for construction projects. This role focuses on learning estimation processes, supporting senior estimators, and ensuring the accuracy and completeness of project cost data. The Estimator I contributes to the bidding and proposal process by gathering, analyzing, and maintaining critical project information while developing foundational estimating skills.

What You'll Do

  • Assist in collecting and organizing data for cost estimates.
  • Prepare preliminary and detailed estimates under supervision.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, and related documents for scope and requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of estimates, revisions, and supporting documentation.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and other departments to ensure accurate project information.
  • Read and analyze proposal contracts, specifications, KMZ files, bills of material (BOM), submittals, and drawings.
  • Identify potential risks, schedule requirements, manpower and equipment needs, and construction methods.
  • Participate in preparing submittals and ensuring compliance with client requirements.
  • Assist in forecasting project costs and cash flow.
  • Distribute scope requests and contract information to potential subcontractors for pricing and quotations.
  • Attend pre-bid meetings (virtual or in-person) as required.
  • Support senior estimators and project teams with additional administrative and technical estimating tasks.

What You'll Bring

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field; or equivalent work experience.
  • Basic understanding of construction estimating principles and practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Excel); familiarity with estimating software is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy in documentation.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

Preferred

  • 2 years of experience in estimating, project coordination, or a related construction discipline.
  • Experience reviewing drawings, proposals, and specifications.
  • Exposure to T&D, utility, or infrastructure project estimating preferred.
  • Pursuit of professional estimating certification (e.g., AACE, ASPE) encouraged and supported. 

Physical Qualifications

  • Primarily office-based with occasional travel to project sites for pre-bid meetings and site assessments.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
  • Occasional lifting and carrying of up to 20 pounds (e.g., project documents, laptop).
  • Must be able to navigate construction sites safely when visiting field locations.
