About this Role

Senior Payroll Accountant

Reports to: Finance Director
FLSA: Exempt

Position Overview

Intermountain Electric, Inc. (IME), a Quanta Services company, is seeking a Senior Payroll Accountant to join our Denver headquarters. This role goes beyond day-to-day payroll processing and focuses on overseeing the payroll function at a strategic level. The Senior Payroll Accountant will ensure accuracy in payroll operations, strengthen compliance with tax and reporting requirements, and connect payroll processes to the company’s financial systems and cash management.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Oversight & Management

  • Oversee the payroll cycle from start to finish, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with federal, state, and company requirements.
  • Monitor payroll processes and controls, identifying improvements to increase efficiency and compliance.
  • Supervise and guide payroll staff or contractors (if applicable).

General Ledger & Cash Integration

  • Process and review general ledger entries related to payroll transactions.
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and ensure accurate reflection of payroll in financial statements.
  • Coordinate payroll activities with cash management to ensure proper funding and reporting of payroll liabilities.

Tax Compliance & Reporting

  • Oversee preparation, review, and submission of payroll tax filings, including federal Form 941, state filings, and annual W-2/1099 reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS, DOL, and state/local payroll tax regulations.
  • Partner with external auditors and internal teams during audits and reviews.

Certified Payroll & Regulatory Reporting

  • Produce and review Certified Payroll Reports for government and union projects.
  • Maintain records and documentation to support prevailing wage and regulatory compliance.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with HR to align payroll with employee onboarding, benefits, and timekeeping systems.
  • Partner with Finance leadership to support month-end and year-end close processes related to payroll expenses and reconciliations.

Continuous Improvement & Leadership

  • Stay up to date with payroll laws, industry trends, and compliance changes.
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to strengthen payroll controls and reporting accuracy.
  • Act as a subject-matter expert and advisor on payroll and payroll tax matters.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3–5+ years of progressive payroll/accounting experience, with demonstrated expertise in payroll compliance and reporting.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll tax regulations, certified payroll requirements, and payroll accounting principles.
  • Proficiency in payroll software (e.g., ADP, Paychex, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage confidential information with discretion.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to collaborate across departments.

 

Compensation Range

The anticipated compensation for this position is - depending on experience and qualifications.
