Payroll Manager

The Payroll Manager oversees a team of four payroll staff, ensuring timely and accurate payroll processing for employees and supporting accounting functions for multi-state, union payroll. This role is critical in driving process improvements, maintaining compliance, and delivering exceptional service to our workforce.
The salary range for this role is $115,000–130,000, depending on experience.
Leadership
• Oversee and manage payroll staff, including training, mentoring, and performance management.
• Represent the payroll function across the organization, serving as the subject matter expert.
• Assign work, monitor progress, and follow up on results to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
• Counsel and coach staff, maintaining team performance and morale.
Payroll Operations
• Manage end-to-end payroll processing for all company employees, including multi-state and union employees.
• Ensure payroll is completed accurately and on schedule.
• Resolve payroll errors, monitor account balances, and provide employee support on pay issues.
• Review payroll data to confirm employees receive correct pay and deductions.
• Maintain compliance with union contracts, rate schedules, and benefits.
• Oversee processing of garnishments, benefits, prevailing wage, and other payroll adjustments.
Systems & Process Improvement
• Lead and align payroll system upgrades and enhancements.
• Continuously review and optimize payroll processes for efficiency and accuracy.
• Utilize payroll software to schedule payments, calculate taxes, and process deductions.
• Prepare quarterly, yearly, and weekly payroll reports.
Collaboration & Compliance
• Partner with HR to monitor promotions, transfers, and terminations.
• Maintain employee insurance and benefit deductions.
• Ensure payroll practices comply with employment laws, policies, and internal controls.
• Participate in meetings regarding payroll policies and updates.
• Support audits and provide payroll-related reporting as needed.
Other
• Stay current with payroll laws, regulations, and best practices.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
• 5+ years of payroll experience.
• 3+ years in a payroll leadership role.
• Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC)
• Strong knowledge of finance and payroll policies, procedures, and practices.
• Familiarity with payroll regulations.
• Experience working within the construction industry
• Understanding of union contracts and rate schedules.
• Proficiency in payroll software and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain confidentiality.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP).
• 5+ years in a payroll leadership role.
• Experience working in JDE.
• Understanding of prevailing wage requirements.
